Summary
This case involves a civil damages suit filed by Zenaida Gregorio against Sansio Philippines Inc. and its employee Emma Datuin after being falsely charged with B.P. Blg. 22 violations. Datuin filed criminal complaints based on bounced checks, but Gregorio had no checking account with the issuing bank and her signatures differed from those on the checks. Due to an incorrect address in the complaint, Gregorio couldn't contest the charges and was arrested and detained. The criminal charges were later dismissed when Datuin executed an Affidavit of Desistance. The Supreme Court ruled that Gregorio's civil complaint was properly based on quasi-delict under Civil Code provisions rather than malicious prosecution, as it alleged negligence and fault without imputing bad faith, and involved breach of rights to personal dignity, security, privacy and peace of mind.
