This 1915 Supreme Court case resolved a commercial dispute over ownership of abaca lost in a shipwreck. Chinese merchant Lim Jocsing had a credit arrangement with F. M. Yaptico firm for purchasing abaca. When Lim Jocsing died in the wreck of steamer Bais carrying his abaca consignment, his estate administrator sued Yaptico for insurance proceeds, claiming the abaca was merely consigned for sale. The Supreme Court reversed the lower court, holding that under the clear contractual terms, specifically paragraph 5 of their 1909 agreement, all goods delivered to Yaptico's steamers became his property unless otherwise specified in writing.
