The provision

Without prejudice to his obligation toward the sublessor, the sublessee is bound to the lessor for all acts which refer to the use and preservation of the thing leased in the manner stipulated between the lessor and the lessee. (1551)

A sublessee is answerable directly to the main landlord for everything concerning the proper use and upkeep of the leased property, following the terms agreed between that landlord and the original tenant. This direct responsibility to the owner exists on top of, and without lessening, the sublessee's separate obligations to the sublessor.
