The provision
No proprietor shall make such excavations upon his land as to deprive any adjacent land or building of sufficient lateral or subjacent support.

A landowner may not excavate on his own land so as to deprive an adjacent land or building of sufficient lateral or subjacent support. Lateral support is what neighbouring soil gives from the side; subjacent support is what underlying strata give from beneath. The restriction is one of the legal easements the Code imposes on ownership by operation of law, and it qualifies the owner's freedom under Article 428 to enjoy and dispose of his property, which is subject to the limitations established by law.
